One of my favorite subjects is the Westwood Branch Basin Forest. It’s on the west side of the condo and we are its caretakers. There is always a downed branch, a fallen tree or an overgrown wild honeysuckle or grape vine that needs cut up, cut down, chopped down, burned up or otherwise cleaned up to keep the five-acre forest in check. We are amateur foresters trying to keep what we like healthy while trying to minimize what we don’t like. I love the light and shadow in the forest. I love how the different tree species intermingle creating subtle texture variation in the canopy above. I like how the changing seasons bring predictable differences in the look and feel of the forest year after year. I like how I don’t have to go far to take pictures of an Indiana forest, but I do have to work at it.
